What to Wear for Your Family Photo Session

Quick Checklist:

  • Choose one patterned outfit and build colors around it

  • Dress for the season (keep kids warm!)

  • Stick to layers, textures, and neutrals or earthy tones

  • Skip logos or anything too busy

  • Bring a blanket, snacks, water, and a favorite toy/book

  • Pack a backup outfit for little ones

  • Change kids into outfits at the location if possible

  • Prep kids with fun, not pressure

Figuring out what to wear for family photos doesn’t have to be stressful. The best outfits are the ones that feel natural, timeless, and comfortable—because when you’re relaxed, the connection shows.

If you’re not sure where to start, choose one person to wear a pattern—a floral dress, plaid coat, or striped shirt works perfectly. Then, build everyone else’s outfits using colors pulled from that pattern. It creates a coordinated look without being too matchy-matchy.

Dress for the season is another big one. Especially for kids—if they’re cold, it’s going to show on their faces. A cute light outfit in the snow isn’t worth the shivers! Layers, sweaters, and warm accessories like hats or scarves not only look great on camera but also keep everyone happy. Also keep in mind we’re in the PNW, there’s always a chance of rain so prepare for it with boots and I’ll provide the clear umbrellas!

What to bring:

  • A blanket to sit on (the ground in the PNW is almost never guaranteed to be dry).

  • Snacks and water—nothing resets grumpy little ones like a quick snack break.

  • A favorite toy or book—great for comfort and sometimes even for photos.

  • A backup outfit for kids who are prone to messes or spills.

  • And pro tip: change kids into their outfits at the location to give them less time to dirty or wrinkle their clothes before we start.

And when it comes to preparing little ones for the session, you’re welcome to tell them we’re taking photos—but if they tend to get nervous, it might be better to frame it differently. I love to suggest saying you’re just putting on special outfits and going to play in a beautiful place. Keep the focus on fun, not expected behavior, and kids are usually much more relaxed about our time together.

At the end of the day, the photos are about connection, not perfection. Neutrals and earthy tones always photograph beautifully, but a pop of color or texture adds personality. When in doubt, aim for an elevated version of your everyday style—something you’ll love looking back on for years to come.
