Dreamy Family Session in the Columbia River Gorge

There’s nothing quite like celebrating milestones with families I’ve had the joy of photographing before. This September, I met up with a wonderful family on Hamilton Island in the Columbia River Gorge for a dreamy session to celebrate their son’s first birthday. I first photographed this family for their son’s newborn session, so it was incredibly special to see how much he and his older sister had grown and capture this new chapter for them.

The setting could not have been more perfect. The September light cast a warm, golden glow over the Gorge, highlighting the stunning views and vibrant fall tones. Hamilton Island provided a mix of open fields, rocky backdrops, and sweeping vistas—an ideal location for a family session. We captured the day using both digital and film photography, ensuring a mix of timeless, textured images alongside the versatility of modern digital shots. Film has a way of bringing out the richness and emotion in these moments, making the session feel even more special.

When it comes to family photos, the best advice I can offer is to focus on having fun and playing with your kids rather than trying to force a particular attitude or pose. Children shine when they’re allowed to be themselves, and that authenticity comes through beautifully in photos. Whether it’s running through a field, tossing leaves into the air, or sharing snuggles, those candid, playful moments make for the most heartfelt and memorable images. Letting go of perfection and embracing the chaos of family life results in photos that truly capture the love and connection between you.

This session was full of those kinds of moments. Watching their little one explore the landscape with wide-eyed wonder, laugh in the arms of his parents, and clap with delight as we celebrated his first year of life was such a joy to document. Their 4-year-old daughter brought so much personality and joy to the session as well. She danced in the fields, played with her brother, and shared the sweetest hugs with her parents and brother. These are the kinds of memories that become cherished keepsakes for years to come.
