Capturing Classic Portraits: My Approach to Wedding Photography

When engaged couples think about wedding photography, they often feel torn between wanting natural, candid moments and needing the classic, formal portraits that stand the test of time. My approach blends the best of both worlds: documentary-style storytelling that captures raw emotion, alongside timeless portraits of family, the wedding party, and the couple.

The Heart of Documentary Photography

Documentary wedding photography is all about capturing the moments as they unfold—unscripted, unfiltered, and full of feeling. The tear-filled first look, a whispered joke between newlyweds, the way a parent squeezes their child’s hand before walking down the aisle—these are the kinds of moments that can’t be staged. I use a film-inspired approach to preserve these fleeting emotions in a way that feels timeless and nostalgic.

But this isn’t the only way I approach photographing a wedding day. While those fleeting, candid moments are invaluable, there’s also something special about intentionally crafted portraits that highlight the beauty and significance of the day. Striking a balance between the raw emotion of documentary photography and the elegance of formal portraits ensures that every meaningful aspect of a wedding is captured.

The Role of Formal Photos

While documentary photography is my foundation, I also recognize the importance of formal portraits. These are the images that will be framed in family homes, passed down through generations, and included in wedding albums as lasting heirlooms. But formal doesn’t have to mean stiff or overly posed. I approach wedding party and family portraits with an editorial touch—structured yet natural, allowing personalities to shine through.

For example, at Kelsie and Barrett’s Stillwater wedding, they wanted their wedding party captured in a modern, composed way that still felt effortless. The rich brick textures of the venue, the natural interactions, and the intentional posing in front of the wide industrial window created a timeless yet relaxed feel that suited the day perfectly.

Couple Portraits with an Editorial Touch

When it comes to couple portraits, I aim to strike the perfect balance between classic posing and natural connection. Instead of stiff, static shots, I guide couples with movement-based prompts—walking together, laughing, sharing a quiet moment—so they feel comfortable while I capture their most authentic selves. The result? A mix of romantic, artful images that feel elevated but never forced.

Why Both Matter

A documentary approach tells the story, but formal photos create heirloom images that stand the test of time. My goal is to deliver a wedding gallery that is both emotionally rich and visually stunning—one that feels true to you while also giving you the classic, timeless portraits you’ll treasure forever.
